Coquitlam Amateur Radio Club Wraps Up Another Successful Field Day

The Coquitlam Amateur Radio Club (VE7SCC) hosted its annual ARRL Field Day event this past weekend (June 28–29, 2025) at Blue Mountain Park, bringing together amateur radio operators, military reservists, and public visitors for 27 hours of non-stop radio activity, learning, and community outreach.

Operating as VE7SCC in 3A category, the team made over 1200 contacts using a combination of voice, digital and CW modes — all while running on a mix of solar and generator power to simulate emergency conditions.

“This was one of our best-organized Field Days yet,” said club president Phil MacCormick (VE7KJR). “We had a great mix of experienced operators, first-timers, and partner organizations working side by side.”

One highlight was the use of drones operated by members of the RCMP E-Division, who assisted with launching antenna lines high into the treetops — a safer and faster alternative to traditional air cannons.

Support also came from the 39 Signal Regiment, helping with logistics, station setup, and on-air activity. The site featured a GOTA (Get On The Air) station for newcomers, a public info tent, and a solar-powered QRP station provided by Paul Wagner, VE7TL.

“We had lots of visitors stop by, including Coquitlam Councilor Craig Hodge.  Some even got to jump on the air,” said Phil. “It’s a great way to show how amateur radio plays a critical role when other systems go down.”

Plans are already in motion for Field Day 2026. The club welcomes anyone interested in radio, technology, or emergency preparedness to get involved.
