Winter Field Day 2026

Winter Field Day was held on 24-25 January at HMCS Discovery, Stanley Park. located on Deadman’s Island. Paul VE7TL organized the event and Arron VA7ZZA secured access and security clearance to the Seaman’s Mess for overnight accommodations.
Attending CARESS members include:

Paul, VE7TL
Arron, VA7ZZA
Steve, VE7NZ
Guil, VE7BMW
Derek, VA7WZD

The members operated 80-2M CW, SSB, FM and Digital with over 60 contacts in sub-zero weather, proving our ability to set up and maintain emergency communications under adverse conditions.

CFARS operated a station with their own net in conjunction with ours. We initally attempted QRP but the band conditions were poor that we reverted to 100W battery supply with a generator used for charging. Naval ratings and a few Officers attended and they were very interested in our explanations of how HF vs VHF works and how we can send digital signals over more than 4000 km. This was a great teaching event, not only for the Navy but also for our newer amateur radio operators who were not as familiar with field set up. Their interests indicate future invitations to operate POTA and other events at this beautiful and unique location. It was also an excellent opportunity for us to showcase CARESS’s continuing capabilities regarding emergency radio communications.
